BEAUTYBYMO convened an unconventional outreach last year in Makoko, Lagos State, and it was tagged “The Re-igniting Beauty Outreach”.
10 women got luxurious makeup looks, styling and portrait sessions. We also fed and clothed 60 adults and 40 children.
The purpose of the outreach was to help the beneficiaries catch a break, look stunning and reinstate confidence. A lot of the women are petty traders, they mostly work round the clock and have forgotten what it feels like to pay attention to making themselves look beautiful, they also are not able to afford luxurious face beats and photo sessions.
My mum was a huge inspiration to this outreach as I remember how tough things were while she was rasing my sisters and I. She was too focused on making sure we were comfortable to pay attention to making beauty efforts, even if she wanted to, there wasn’t excess to splurge.
This experience helped me connect to these women. It was way beyond charity for me, it was more about spreading light and hope. It was more about enhancing self-esteem, as that’s one of our core values, and it was more than a joy to see that materialize.
